Books similar to wayward pines6/10/2023 He spends his lifetime trying to figure out how to save humanity, or rather, prolong its existence. Sometime in the 1970s a brilliant young scientist named David Pilcher figures out that the human race as we know it is going to become extinct within thirty or forty generations because of genetic mutations brought on by all of the chemicals and pollution we have set loose on the planet. So what the hell is going on, you ask? Well, I’ll tell you. And the person who says she’s his ex-partner Kate Hewson is actually his ex-partner, despite the fact that she seems to have aged more than ten years since they last saw each other a year or so ago. And yes, that is actually Ethan’s real wife and son living in Wayward Pines when Ethan shows up, and yes, they are actually five years older than they were the last time Ethan saw them. First, no, the residents of Wayward Pines are not robots as in The Stepford Wives. I don’t think there’s any way to talk about Wayward without giving away important plot points in Pines. If you want to maximize suspense while reading these books, don’t go any further. There are spoilers aplenty to be found here, about Pines, and also about Wayward. I promised no spoilers in my review of the first Wayward Pines book, but no such promise exists in this post. Clockwork Prince by Cassandra Clare6/10/2023 The organization reports that Florida had the second-highest number of book-banning incidents in the nation during that period, trailing only Texas. The nation has seen a surge in book bans over the past two years as parents, conservative activists, and elected officials have flooded school districts with requests to wipe scores of titles from classrooms and libraries - with Florida still leading the pack in such incidents.Īfter more than 200 books were banned in various school districts across Florida between the summer of 2021 and 2022, districts continued the crackdown, banning 357 books between July and December 2022, according to the nonprofit organization PEN America. Still, there's one item school districts in Florida appear to have consistently banned more than almost any other U.S. It's part of a nationwide push by conservative politicians to draw their battle lines in the culture wars and signal to their constituency that they're decidedly anti-woke. Ron DeSantis' administration and the state's Republican-dominated legislature have instituted a dizzying number of regulations restricting what Floridians can say, read, and scroll through mindlessly. Florida's been banning a lot of things these days.įrom an AP African American studies course to classroom gender-identity discussions to TikTok on university phones, Gov. Girl, Going on 17 by Sue Limb6/9/2023 It was immensely cunning of you to compare her to Jane Austen, you ruthless charmer!" But even my mum seemed to tolerate the idea. "I sort of hoped that Dad would be OK about us. "Yeah, it was a brilliant holiday," sighed Jess. I was expecting him to horsewhip me or throw me into the sea." I was astounded that he accepted me as your. "His shouting fits can cause structural damage." "I hope I never irritate him," said Jess. Powell, universally known as Irritable, would be their new head of year when they got back to school tomorrow. "You'd probably choose Irritable Powell," said Fred thoughtfully. "If you were looking for somebody to play God in a bad mood, Dad would be the last person you'd choose." "Your dad is just about the least commanding guy I've ever met." Jess located it on her mobile and handed it over. "Did your dad send you a Commandment today?" asked Fred. Everything was just about as perfect as it could be, except that they had to go back to school tomorrow. A cute dog had visited them and refrained from pooing. They'd shared a chocolate ice cream the size of a small piano. They'd worked a bit on their latest script, based on the Queen delivering her Christmas message as a rap artist. Fred and Jess were sitting under their tree in the park. However, Lynas often misinterprets studies that are key to his conclusions, sometimes dramatically so. Throughout Six Degrees, Lynas cites up-to-date peer reviewed science to support its claims. Thanks to Max Daniel and Abie Rohrig for comments. I shared this post with Mark Lynas before publishing. The consistent effect that this has is to bias his conclusions in a pessimistic direction. Throughout, Lynas misinterprets evidence and ignores nuance. However, in my opinion, Six Degrees is very disappointing. Like Lynas, I also think climate change is an important problem: I helped to set up the Founders Pledge Climate Change Fund, which has moved millions of dollars to climate change charities. I recommended him as a guest for the 80,000 Hours podcast and introduced him to the team there. I have invited him to speak at several events. I am a fan of Lynas’ other work on nuclear power and GM food. At 6☌, we face possible human extinction (p. The outside world had little influence on the extended Hamilton family, which included eleven cousins living in several houses on the property bequeathed by their grandfather. The second of four sisters born within six years (there was also a younger brother), the Hamilton girls pursued educations and professional goals in the face of declining family fortunes. From her earliest days, Alice Hamilton’s deepest attachment was to her family.
